Jul 13, 2009 · I upgraded from a Rebel 5400 to a 504M(not the classic model) for balage. The 504M is a much heavier built baler than the Rebel. I don't think the Rebel is designed for the added weight and moisture levels required for balage. By the way, the Rebel was an excellent dry hay baler. I ran it for 6 years and was always pleased with its operation.I bought a Vermeer 5500 Rebel at the end of last season. Really like the baler, but it seems like most of my bales will have a "tail" of twine 4 to 6 foot off the bale. Its really a pain when moving the bales as the tail will get caught under the front tractor tire usually breaking off some twine in the field. Lke John said, you have to get the eccentric collar that is on the shaft off. Use a punch to rotate it. I have had to cut a lot of bearings off with a torch that are rusted on.The Rebel is a little lighter built, but pretty much the same workings. From my experience if they start a bale the only thing to stop them from turning is the slip clutch, chain breaks, gearbox goes down or something else mechanical from what I have seen. John, The 7040 is rated at 64hp and should handle the 5410 easily. I have a JD 5210 (45hp) and I pull a Vermeer 5400 Rebel easily however most of my ground is very flat.
